If Game 1 of the Western Hockey League final is any indication of what the series will be like, hockey fans are in for a treat.
The Regina Pats and Seattle Thunderbirds treated a sold-out Brandt Centre crowd to an outstanding opener with the T-Birds winning the game 2-1 in overtime on a goal by Grenfell’s Donovan Neuls.
Neuls found a puck that hit the crossbar courtesy Ethan Bear and swatted it past Tyler Brown just 14 seconds into overtime to give Seattle first blood in the series.
Regina had to play the last half of the game without Adam Brooks. The Pats captain was flattened by Seattle defenceman Turner Ottenbreit on a hit in the Seattle end midway through the second period. The hit left Brooks bloodied and dazed as he left the ice.
While Pats Head Coach and General Manager John Paddock would not update Brooks’ condition after the game, he said the hit reminded him of ones thrown by NHL hall-of-famer Scott Stevens and that the hit was not necessarily a high one.
The two teams will do it again Saturday night at the Brandt Centre for Game 2 before heading to Seattle for Game 3, 4 and possibly 5.
Seattle – Ethan Bear (6) from Mathew Barzal and Ryan Gropp – 4:55 PP.
Regina – Connor Hobbs (5) from Dawson Leedahl and Sam Steel – 12:11 PP.
Seattle – Donovan Neuls (7) from Ethan Bear and Mathew Barzal – 0:14.
