There is a positive development in a market access issue for Saskatchewan pulse exports to India.
India is a huge market for pulse growers in the province and apparently is showing a willingness to accept Canada’s approach to dealing with certain pests — although there is still a concern about chemical treatment.
Pulse Canada chair, Lee Moats, is hoping India will see there is no need for fumigation.
“India has a group of concerns that are unique to them,” said Moats. “And we have to address their concerns, just like we would expect the government of India to address the Canadian concerns on things we import into Canada.”
Last year Canada exported over one billion dollars worth of pulse crops to India, most of which is grown in Saskatchewan.
