Saskatchewan durum producers could be facing a fight in Europe over country of origin labelling rules.
Italy wants to put country or origin labelling on durum pasta sold in Italy.
Cam Dahl, president of Cereals Canada, is concerned because it would push up the cost of shipping Canadian durum to Italy.
“This is clearly designed as a measure to make Canadian durum more expensive in Italy,” said Dahl. “And to support the Italian durum growers.”
Dahl says officials with Cereals Canada will be in Europe later this month to discuss the issue with pasta groups and European Union officials.
The Canadian government has already raised the issue with members of the European Commission.
