The NDP’s health critic wants to know why the Saskatchewan Party is cutting the provincial hearing aid program stating the health minister has had his facts wrong right from the beginning.
Health critic Danielle Chartier is demanding the cuts be reversed.
“The cut to the Hearing Aid Program was the biggest cut to healthcare,” said Chartier. “And it is .o5-percent of health funding. This clearly isn’t the government getting a handle on their expenditures. So Mr Speaker, why this cut? And why this program? Why is hearing loss clearly not a priority for the SaskParty?”
Health minister Jim Reiter says it may be the NDP who have their facts wrong.
“The issues around the Hearing Aid Plan that have been consistently raised in the past,” said Reiter. “Cochlear implants, other hearing devices – those programs and the treatment around those programs – preliminary and post-operative – those are going to continue.”
Reiter says the intent is for the province to get out of selling hearing aids and the audiology services around it, but the other services are continuing.
