The provincial auditor says the government is lagging behind when it comes to regulating oil and gas pipelines.
In the report released Tuesday, Provincial Auditor Judy Ferguson said the Ministry of Economy was not effectively regulating the industry, implementing only two of five recommendations from their 2012 audit, and suggests they have work to do to catch up.
Ferguson said at the five year mark, she is a little concerned with the lack of what she thinks the progress should be.
“What is the ministry doing in terms of actually regulating the pipelines and frankly we’re finding that they’re just at the formative stage, it’s been five years since we made a recommendation and we thought they’d be further along,” Ferguson said on Tuesday.
Ferguson added she is hopeful the government will continue to push towards a risk-based assessment approach to verify pressure tests as well as monitor construction of new, and safety of existing pipelines.
