An RCMP officer will find out his sentence Wednesday in a Saskatoon courthouse after pleading guilty to assault.
Corporal Dean Flaman was one of three officers responding to reports of two teenagers breaking into vehicles in Warman last February. Court heard one of the officers was arresting the second teen before Flaman ran in, said, “this is what happens when you are in my *expletive* town,” and then punched the suspect twice before choking him.
Flaman’s lawyer argued the 47-year-old was at a horrific fatal crash near North Battleford two days before the call, and just hours before the break and enter call had attended a teen suicide scene, and didn’t have time to debrief, adding additional stress that led to the overreaction.
Flaman’s lawyer argued for a conditional discharge, while the Crown argued against a discharge but didn’t specify a recommended sentence.
The officer was suspended with pay after the assault, but reinstated in April.
