Regina’s two school systems may soon see its students sharing transportation services.
Recently, a joint meeting with took place with Education Minister Don Morgan and the Regina Catholic and Public school boards.
Greg Enion is Director of Education with Regina Public Schools. He says any decision on shared transportation will not take place this fall, but says the two boards want to draft a memorandum of understanding.
“Both school divisions have set their plans for school transportation for the fall,” Enion said. “There will be no changes to transportation that’s been outline for this fall. This will be work that will take us into the 2018/2019 budget.”
Enion says there is the potential for savings by looking at sharing transportation where it makes geographical and fiscal sense. He says there was agreement from both boards about sharing bus services.
“What we’ve agreed to do is work on a memorandum of understanding,” Enion said. “To look at what are some of the efficiencies in sharing transportation.”
He says the provincial government is on board with the idea and supportive of the two school systems working together.
“This is one thing we believe that there could be some efficiencies that could come forward,” Enion said. “Certainly the government and Ministry of Education is very supportive of us undertaking this work.”
