NDP Education Critic Carla Beck says there are a variety of organizations including the School Boards and the Chamber of Commerce who think the education funding gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous students’ needs to be closed sooner rather than later.
Beck spoke on the issue in Regina Thursday.
The NDP feels the SaskParty has failed to be ‘vigilant’ with the federal government to eliminate the education funding gap, instead cutting provincial funding for Indigenous students.
Beck said the funding gap hurts everyone.
“Not only does it deprive students of the quality of education they deserve,” she says, “it also has an economic impact to the tune of about $1.1 billion per year.”
Currently, Indigenous students receive about 60% of the funding other students receive.
Beck points out that the SaskParty’s cuts have led to the elimination of 12 Indigenous student retention workers in Saskatoon.
