People will be pigging out in Kipling, Sask. as the 5th annual Great Saskatchewan Bacon Festival gets underway Saturday afternoon.
Bacon Fest attracts local chefs, along with some from northern Saskatchewan.
The festival features not only strips of bacon, but all sorts of different bacon creations.
Scott Kearns, one of the organizers of the event, says local and long distance chefs live to see who may like their bacon dishes the most.
“We have somebody bringing candied bacon all the way from up north in the Tisdale area,” said Kearns.
He says there is a lot community support with many people returning for another year.
The roots of the Bacon Fest date back to when the community wanted to raise funds for their local youth centre.
Kearns says the festival has its competitive side, but — in reality — it’s all for a good cause.
Today, the youth centre is nearly complete with eight unique pieces of art created by Saskatchewan artists. And while the work is almost done, residents want the Bacon Fest to live on.
The Great Saskatchewan Bacon Festival kicks off at noon and goes until 4 p.m. at the community centre in Kipling.
