A Regina judge has sentenced a boy now 18 for a fatal crash on the Ring Road that occurred when he pulled the key from the ignition.
On March 13, 2015, the boy, who was a novice driver, was speeding down the Ring Road heading east with three others in the car when he took the key out of the ignition.
The car left the road, went through the ditch and hit 49 year old Saeed Warraich who was headed westbound.
Earlier this year, the boy was found guilty of dangerous driving causing death and dangerous driving causing bodily harm.
He was sentenced to 120 days of open custody — 80 days in a facility and 40 under community supervision, which will be followed by 19 months of probation which include several things including a nightly curfew for the first year, and 185 hours of community service.
The boy, who can’t be named because of his age at the time of the incident, has not been allowed to drive since the incident and will be prohibited from doing so for 32 and a half months.
