The Saskatchewan government has set up trapping seasons for cougars and black bears in certain wildlife management zones in Saskatchewan’s farmland.
Environment minister Scott Moe says cougar and bear populations have been expanding into the southern portion of Saskatchewan.
He says the additional trapping seasons will help reduce human and livestock encounters for both species.
Free range hunting of Cougars is prohibited, the cougar season is for trapping only.
The cougar trapping season is open October 15th to the following March 31st.
The bears may be trapped in zones open to bear hunting with the trapping season begins September 10th and runs to May 31st the following year.
Saskatchewan Trappers Association president Mike Keen says his group has been pushing for a bear trapping season in southern Saskatchewan for several years.
