A former pilot with the Canadian Forces Snowbirds is now their commanding officer.
44 year old Lieutenant-Colonel Mike French assumed command of the group during a ceremony at 15 Wing Moose Jaw this week.
French has wanted to be a pilot since a young age and has carried around a Snowbirds key chain with him for 30 years symbolizing his love for the group.
He says this is the culmination of a dream, but he realizes it is more than accomplishing that.
“I’d be lying if I didn’t feel the full weight of command that comes with this assignment.” French said. “There are 85 people involved in this squadron, and it is no longer about flying a good air show, it is about making sure their careers and their families are looked after.
French flew with the Snowbirds from 2005-2007 and remained with the team until the end of the 2009 season.
