The lawyer, best known for representing wrongly accused clients like David Milgaard, has died in Calgary.
Hersh Wolch passed away Monday afternoon at the age of 77 after collapsing in his home.
Milgaard spent 23 years in prison before being exonerated for the murder of Gail Miller in Saskatoon in 1969. Wolch represented Milgaard at the inquiry into his wrongful conviction.
“Hersh was my friend and he was a good man. He freed me from prison and he worked hard to do so,” said Milgaard. “He has done many things with his life to help others, especially the wrongfully convicted. He has always been a special person to me.”
Wolch also represented Steven Truscott, who was wrongly imprisoned for the 1959 rape and murder of classmate Lynne Harper in southern Ontario and whose conviction was overturned in 2007.
