Well kids, it’s finally here! Festivities around Regina today will officially kick off this year’s Queen City Ex.
First up is the Strawberry Social on the F.W. Hill Mall. Everyone is invited downtown to raise money for Special Olympics with the 40-year tradition of strawberry shortcake, as well as hot dogs, lemonade and live entertainment from Rory Allen. If you don’t know who Elvis is, just ask grandma.
After that it’s parade time! The parade will kick off from it’s usual location at Dewdney and Cameron at 7 and wind it’s way to the Tartan Curling Club, where ribbons will be handed out for the top 3 floats. Then at dusk when the sun goes down, the fireworks will light up the sky over Wascana Park. You’re never too old to enjoy fireworks!
The best part starts tomorrow when gates open at 12 and people, young and old alike, will start streaming in for the rides, the food, the entertainment, and the atmosphere.
I remember growing up in Lethbridge, the fair was the best thing to come to the city all year. It was like Christmas in summer! I just couldn’t wait. Every year on the Saturday night, my cousins would come in from Fort Macleod. My mom, sisters, cousins, aunt and uncle, would all make our way to the exhibition grounds and spend hours eating, riding, and just being in awe of all the sights and sounds. I absolutely loved it.
This is the first year in the last 4 that I won’t be taking my granddaughters. They’ll be enjoying the midway with their cousins and making new memories of their own, which I hope they’ll still carry with them when they hit my age.
Enjoy it kids, because after that, the next big event is called “back to school.”
