In all the years I lived in Saskatchewan I had never been to the exhibition in Regina! Never! That changed this year. When I go to a fair it’s not for the rides, it’s for the food and treats! I don’t do well on the rides but I do play nice with food.
Thursday night started off with the deep-fried Oreo cookies. If you love Oreo cookies and you love deep-fried goods then this is the perfect marriage. A delicious batter coated around Oreo cookies, then dunked into the deep-fryer. The cream centre of the cookie is slightly melted but the rest is sheer delight and sprinkled with icing sugar on top.
Next up was the bacon wrapped pickle dog. It’s best described starting with the inside first and working our way out. Inside is a hot dog, wrapped inside a pickle, which is wrapped with Canadian bacon and all enclosed in a delicious batter. Is it hot? You bet it is! I recommend not eating it right away, pretend it’s pizza. Let it cool and then eat or you’ll end up with a burned mouth-top.
I ended the food experience with the deep-fried Philly Cheese Steak. It’s pretty self-explanatory. Steak and cheese wrapped in a batter, deep-fried and drizzled with a spicy southwestern sauce. Again, pretend it’s pizza and let it cool first. I’d recommend using a fork and have lots of napkins on hand because things will get messy. I had sauce/grease all the way up my elbows and all over my cheeks. It was not a pretty sight. Use a fork.
I concluded the rest of the night eating rolaides and asking myself why I ate all this food. Tonight it’s all about the giant turkey legs and cookies and cream mini donuts. Happy fair food eating!
