Trent Wotherspoon has announced he will be seeking the leadership of the Saskatchewan New Democrats.
He made his intentions public Wednesday morning with a tweet:
- Trent Wotherspoon steps down as Sask. NDP Interim Leader to consider running for leadership
- Saskatoon MLA Ryan Meili to run for Sask. NDP leader
- Nicole Sarauer named interim leader of Saskatchewan NDP
Wotherspoon, who once said he wouldn’t be running for the position, said this spring, time away from the legislative session was one of the main reasons for his change of heart.
He says his career in politics have resulted in some solid relationships being forged, and he is hoping over the next few months to foster those relationships.
“I don’t take that lightly,” Wotherspoon said. “And I look forward to taking the steps and doing the work in the days and weeks and months and years ahead. I do feel I have built a strong relationship with people in this province.”
Ryan Meili, New Democratic Party MLA for Saskatoon Meewasin, announced in May he would be running for leadership of the Saskatchewan NDP.
Regina MLA Nicole Sarauer has been named the new Interim Leader of the Saskatchewan NDP for the time-being.
The next leader of the Saskatchewan NDP will be elected at a convention of party members on May 6, 2018.
