CAA Saskatchewan is reporting an increasing number of people speeding and driving distracted in school zones.
And with the new school year starting September 5th, spokesperson Christine Niemczyk says it’s important for students to practice safety as well.
“For those who are crossing the streets, we suggest – with your parents or caregivers – to familiarize themselves with the route you would like them to take,” Niemczyk said. “Have the younger students walk with an older sibling or an adult, perhaps. Understand the route you are taking and obey the traffic signals as well.”
Niemczyk says it’s important for motorists to obey the posted speed limit.
“Some motorists have said, ‘well you know the kids are in school from 9 until 3,'” Niemczyk said. “A lot of the children are attending school after school, before school, weekends and during schooll breaks.”
And, as always, she reminds drivers to watch for kids getting on or off school buses.
