The province’s prescription drug plan will expand on Tuesday to include Mifegymiso.
It’s the first oral medication approved by Health Canada for the medical termination of a pregnancy of up to 49 days after conception.
Mark Wyatt with the Ministry of Health said there are a few restrictions in place since taking the medication is considered a medical procedure.
“In terms of the provincial formula coverage, it will be based on the existing coverage that a person would have under our various drug plan programs, for most people that is an income tested program,” Wyatt said.
Wyantt says when last they checked 58 medical professionals are waiting to be trained to be able to prescribe the drug, 2,400 licenses have been issued to date in the province.
Alberta, B.C, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Ontario and Quebec also offer access to Mifegymiso.
