A new recycling program has been launched in downtown Regina and in the Cathedral neighbourhood.
The pilot project sees blue bottle-baskets installed throughout the area, giving people the option to recycle bottles and reduce litter.
Janet Aird, the manager of Waste Diversion Services with City of Regina says the concept of the bins is quite simple.
People drop in bottles or cans and often, they are removed by others to get the recycling refund.
“They’re self-servicing, and so typically the maintenance of them is low because people, as you put them in, other people will come and collect them to get the refund back.”
Aird says it’s a concepts which has been successful in Saskatoon.
She says any diversion away from the landfill is welcomed by the city of Regina.
The SARCAN Public Space Recycling Grant provided a grant for the initiative and contributed to the program.
