The rain has arrived! After an incredibly hot and dry summer we’re now being treated with a nice soaking rain in southern Saskatchewan. Many (but not all) farmers have the grain in the bin now and I would imagine they’re happy to see this moisture go into the ground for the next growing season.
I have discovered this rain has really put an extra spring in people’s steps lately. While Monday’s world news was largely sad and depressing, people smiled when the rain arrived and brought with it, that beautiful “fresh rain” scent that simply cannot be duplicated by air freshener companies no matter how hard they try! It’s been so long since we’ve had a great rain that many knew it was wanted and needed. Perhaps it’s just me, and I know it’s October, but even the lawns seemed greener today as I walked to work. The sunburned brown grass was washed away!
So while some may complain that pets will make for muddy car seats and house floors today, lets remember that this will help crops, gardens, flowers, trees, etc next year! One can always clean up paw prints, but trying to combine a dried up crop is not so fun and ultimately affects Saskatchewan’s economy in a huge way.
Now, while we’re enjoying the rain here, our friends in the southwest and in Alberta are dealing with the after effects of a terrible winter storm. Many areas in Alberta are without power and some roads remain closed as of Tuesday morning. That is not the kind of precipitation we want just yet, so let’s be thankful we just have the rain. And if, for some reason, you decide to do your happy dance in the rain and mist……I won’t judge! Just don’t do it in the middle of the street when I’m trying to get home!
