Airport Safety Week is wrapped up in Canada, and the fire chief at the Regina International Airport took some time to show the media what’s happening behind the scenes at the airport.
Fire Chief Kevin Hembroff says crew at the fire hall is always on duty for each and every flight which touches down.
“We look after all commercial aircraft,” Hembroff told 620 CKRM News Director, Christina Cherneskey. “In this firehall, we have 9 firefighters, 3 captains, 6 firefighters and, of course, myself. The Fire Chief.”
Hembroff says there are two massive fire trucks, along with a smaller vehicle, always standing-by in case of an emergency.
“Not only do we cover all the aircraft crashes or aircraft incidents,” Hembroff said. “We cover all the medicals. We do a lot of other calls. So, these guys are here all the time. Even if the flight is late at night, they stay, until that flight has landed.”
Hembroff says the crews are trained for nearly every type of emergency.
