Thousands of signatures are on a petition to bring back the access road from Highway 1 to Main Street in Balgonie.
With a new overpass built, aimed to reduce the chance of a serious accident, the road was closed permanently during construction.
Safety concerns were first raised, and now local business is taking a hit.
Dick Champlone owns The Diner, and said layoffs and lost revenue are now a common theme for him.
“With the number of seniors in this area and the number that regularly come through the area, they don’t want to go over that overpass, because it’s like a jungle to them up there. They just carry straight on to Regina and come straight back to their own homes, they don’t stop anymore,” Champlone said.
A petition to be presented to the Ministry of Highways has been circulating in the community and has close to three-thousand signatures on it.
Champlone said the fate of his business will probably come down to the province’s response to the petition.
“That’s all I’m waiting for, is to hear from them, and if it’s positive and if they’re going to re-open it and give us a right in and right out then I’ll still be around, and if they’re not my guess is I won’t be around anymore anyway,” Champlone said.
In September alone Champlone said he lost well over ten-thousand dollars in revenue and has now had to layoff four employees.
