The Saskatoon Fire Department was called to a chemical fire in the city’s north industrial area this morning.
Assistant Fire Chief Wayne Rodger says they were called to Akzo Nobel Chemicals Ltd. just after 4 a.m. after a security person noticed flames coming from a smokestack. When fire crews arrived, they found a tank full of fuel additives had ignited.
Rodger says the fire is contained, but because the chemical is combustible, they can’t just open the tank, so they are using another method to cool down the chemical.
“Currently our staff, with the assistance of staff from Azko Nobel here, are cooling the interior of the tank to drop the ignition temperature of the product within.”
Rodger says they won’t know what caused the ignition until they can finish cooling down the tank.
