Fighting crime in Saskatchewan was a major part of the debate in the Saskatchewan legislature Monday.
The NDP is suggesting the Wall government take a more preventative approach by spending more on housing, jobs and education.
Justice minister Don Morgan says a new preventative strategy has been undertaken but gangs, drugs and a homicide rate remain a key concern.
He says the province is taking more steps to prevent crime as well as training more police officers.
Morgan adds RCMP funding is up by 68 percent and municipal police grants have jumped 100 percent in the last 10 years.
He says the province has added 120 municipal police officers and 258 officers on the new rural protection and response team.
