The time is here to gather up your culinary skills or try and develop some with the goal being a signature dish to take to your potluck dinner.
The term means taking a pot full of food to an event. The tastes and textures are varied, you get to try some other food you might not normally go near. Curries, dips, desserts and European fare, the categories are endlessly delicious. (Pass the cabbage rolls – one more time!) It is a novel idea and one full of creativity and food knowledge.
Have you every thought of trying something different that might be a healthier alternative to an old standby. Do you purchase your item and then plate it for the event. Do you find you make industrial sizes of chili, mashed potatoes, stew and then have to crate the leftovers home.
The world of radio is unfamiliar with people going hungry when it comes to potluck! There is always more than enough food for everyone, so it covers off those that do not want to participate, although why wouldn’t you – that’s part of the novelty! No food or dining idea is a bad one! Is it?
One year, I took a spiral ham to a potluck. It seemed the year before there wasn’t enough meat. Of course the year of the ham then turned out to be the year of EVERYONE bringing meat!
A good rule of thumb is to have a sign up list so you know what is covered off and you can create balance! Planning is everything!
I plan on doing a chicken chili as a test run for the real deal on Friday! I’m probably the lamest as per these events because at my advanced age, I have yet to create a “Signature” dish!!
If Friday’s attempt is a flop, then I have one more shot! Maybe I’ll just be buying a bag of salad and a bottle of dressing – talk about a cop out!
Happy Potluck Month!
