Agriculture minister Lyle Stewart has announced 7.7 million dollars in federal-provincial funding for 30 crop related research projects.
In addition, the two governments are providing 6.25 million dollars in operating funds for the U of S Crop Development Centre over five years.
Stewart says the research funding is important create future growth opportunities and improve the bottom line for farmers and food processors.
He says research centres on such projects as developing club root resistant canola, improved fusarium resistance in durum, better control of root rot in peas and lentils, and increasing the use of faba beans in pet food and fish feed to create another use for Saskatchewan pulses.
The 30 research projects also generate additional research funds of 3.1 million dollars from industry partners like the many grain commissions in Saskatchewan.
