Sara England says it was a thrill to win the provincial junior women’s curling title on December 31 at the same place where many banners carrying the name of her late mother are hung, but it is time to start having banners with her name on it that can sit alongside.
England and her team consisting of third Shelby Brandt, second Stasia Wisniewski and lead Rayann Zerr will represent Saskatchewan at the Canadian Junior Curling Championship in Shawnigan, Quebec starting Saturday.
England understand the comparisons people put on her because of what Sandra Schmirler accomplished in her curling career, but she maintains there is no added pressure put on her because of that.
“I think people think there is pressure, but I don’t put that on myself.” England maintains. “What really helps me is my support system, my team, my family, my friends. I am my own person and I just conduct myself that way.”
England was at the Canadians last year as well, but she was the third on a rink skipped by Kaitlyn Jones. Jones is now skipping the Nova Scotia team
On the men’s side, Saskatoon’s Rylan Kleiter is representing the province for a second straight year.
