The SCEP Centre is benefitting from fundraising events.
Concerts and various fundraisers held throughout 2017 raised over $4,000 for the counselling and support centre.
Music therapist Melanie McDonald says the money raised will help out several young children.
“A great deal of that money actually goes towards enabling the children at this program to be able to have music therapy in the summer, as well as in the school year program,” she says.
She says when done properly, music therapy can be instrumental in developing a plethora of essential skills in young children.
“Through the use of music, I work on social skills with children, I work on communication skills with children, I work on non-verbal with children. I work on turn-taking and listening, fine and gross motor.”
McDonald says with the city’s widespread budget cuts to specialized programs, the organization has felt the impact, which makes these funds all the more important and appreciated.
