The University of Regina Cougars jumped out into a big lead after one quarter and maintained that lead for the rest of the game as they took Game 1 of a best of 3 Canada West women’s basketball quarter-final over UBC by a score of 85-70 on Thursday night.
Kyanna Giles led the number 2 ranked Cougars with a 20 point evening while Charlotte Kot had 19 points and six rebounds while Sara Hubenig contributed 12 points including three 3-pointers–all of them in the first 10 minutes of play helping Regina to a 24-13 lead.
Head Coach Dave Taylor liked the start, but says his team needs to be better in Game 2.
“I thought we were a little inconsistent. When we got a big lead, we couldn’t put them away.” Taylor said. “Give credit to them for coming back, but we can be better defensively.”
Game 2 of the series goes Friday at the CKHS starting at 7 with Game 3 if needed happening Saturday.
The Cougars are the host team for the USports National Championships which go March 8-11.
The men’s basketball team was also in playoff action as they started a best of 3 series in Lethbridge against the Pronghorns. Things did not go well for Steve Burrows’ team as they were beaten 115-68.
