SaskPower is pushing ahead with its testing of smart meters.
This after the disastrous results of smart meter installations in 2014 when the province ordered the Crown Corporation to pull more than 100 thousand of the meters out of service, after reports of eight cases where the devices caught fire.
Last fall, the company began installing 584 new smart meters at commercial and industrial sites.
SaskPower’s Cheryl Robertson says the meters are operating as planned with only one meter malfunctioning, where it simply stopped working. The next step is to install 75 hundred more meters in commercial and industrial sites to undergo further testing and to make sure the company is ready for a provincial rollout.
There is no time-frame for the rollout. More details about the test expansion will be announced in the spring.
