The University of Regina Cougars women’s basketball team is one win away from playing for a conference title on their home floor next weekend.
On Thursday night, the Cougars held off a Calgary rally in the final five minutes of the fourth quarter to take a 61-58 win and a 1-0 lead in the best of three series.
Head Coach Dave Taylor it was an ugly victory and one they had to grind out, but it was one he will certainly take.
He adds the depth of his team came through on this night as everyone was needed to chip in offensively.
“That’s one of our strengths for sure.” Taylor said. “We didn’t have a big run, but even on a bad offensive night we still found a way to score 61. On defence, I thought we were horrendous and we have to correct that. We gave them way too many easy looks.”
Charlotte Kot led the team in scoring with 12 with Kyia Giles adding 11 and Carolina Gonsalves and Sara Hubenig contributing nine each.
The Cougars will try and wrap up the series Friday night in a 7 o’clock start at the CKHS.
