It went right down to the last rock, but Team Saskatchewan has evened its record at 2-2 at the Tim Hortons Brier.
Steve Laycock and his Saskatoon rink consisting of Dallan Muyres, Kirk Muyres and Matt Dunstone needed an extra end to defeat Eddie McKenzie of Prince Edward Island in afternoon action at the Brandt Centre Monday.
Laycock says his team had to work for this one.
“They definitely tested us. It’s as good as I’ve ever seen that team play.” Laycock said moments after the game. “Everytime we made any little mistake, they jumped on it and made us tough. We were just lucky his last shot overcurled a little giving Matt the shot he needed for the win.
Laycock will play twice on Tuesday battling Northern Ontario’s Brad Jacobs and Nunavut’s David St. Louis. Jacobs is tied for the lead in Pool B at 4-0 which is the same record as Manitoba’s Reid Carruthers. Ontario’s John Epping is 3-1 followed by Laycock at 2-2. After that, it is Prince Edward Island, Quebec and New Brunswick are at 1-3. The top four from each pool advance to the championship pool which begins Thursday.
