The Saskatchewan Stock Growers is raising concerns about proposed Health Canada packaging regulations for ground beef.
General Manager Chad MacPherson is worried the new Health Canada front-of-pack labelling requirements will stifle consumer demand because it focuses on saturated fat and not the nutritional benefits.
“Ground beef is being a factor for being included in this,” said McPherson. “Just because it’s being ground, which they consider is being processed, so it’s getting factored in with deli meats and other things.”
MacPherson noted ground beef is healthy and nutritious. He also stated the labels focus strongly on saturated fat content, which damages the true health content of the product and as a result, it could lead consumers to be deceived.
“We feel that ground beef is a healthy protein source for people and it’s affordable,” he says.
