Sunday is April Fool’s Day. The day of pranks.
Here’s the problem with that. People are expecting to be pranked and seeing as pranks are at their best when people are not expecting them, the day is a total dud! That is why I don’t prank anymore. There were days in my career when I’d start off my radio show with a heavy metal song and announce that the radio station was changing it’s music format from country to rock. The problem here was, playing only one song wouldn’t cut it, and any more than one would elicit a call from an angry program director. It was a lose/lose situation.
Back on April 1, 2009, the wonderful city of Moose Jaw announced that it would rebrand itself with the new city slogan “Surprisingly Unexpected.” Really? When I saw this story and noticed the date it came down, I thought it had to be an April Fool’s joke. It sounded too lame for a slogan for any city. My granddaughter could have come up with that!
Greg Morgan, from our sister station MY92.1, and I were both working that morning and I remember betting Greg $20 that the slogan had to be a prank. It just had to be! As the days went by and there was no word coming from city council in Moose Jaw stating otherwise, I came to the conclusion it was no joke and I forked over $20 to Morgan.
I was busted. The thing I thought must be a prank turned out to be real.
That’s when I decided that I just couldn’t figure out this April Fool’s stuff any longer.
