The town of Lafleche is on pins and needles while hoping everyone is on their computer starting Friday morning
Voting for what community will be the 2018 winner in the Kraft Hockeyville contest gets underway Friday at 10 AM, and lasts until Saturday at 6:30 pm with the votes being tabulated and announced on Hockey Night in Canada Saturday night during the late game of the weekly doubleheader. You can vote as many times as you would like.
Gillian de Grauuw is the woman who put together the bid for the town–about an hour south of Moose Jaw. She admits her town might be the underdog amongst the four finalists, but they have something that High River, Alberta, Lucan, Ontario and Huntington, Quebec don’t have and that is the Saskatchewan spirit.
“Saskatchewan has never won this competition in the 11 years it has gone on. “de Grauuw said. “I think Lafleche is the perfect example of Hockeyville and if we have all of Saskatchewan behind us, I think we can do it.”
If Lafleche wins the contest, they will not only get $250,000 for upgrades to what is an aging arena in the town, but they will also get the right to host an NHL exhibition game in September.
de Grauuw says that game probably would not happen in Lafleche for many reasons, but it would be held somewhere in southern Saskatchewan in a rink that provides what the NHL needs to hold such a game.
