The City of Regina is answering to their public accounts statement, where it was revealed 61 city staffers are making $150,000 a year.
The statement includes the names of everyone that makes more than $50,000 per year on city salary.
Barry Lacey from the city says while the city is in difficult financial times, Regina needs to be able to offer favourable wages to bring in quality staff in many areas.
“We know residents want high calibre police and fire services, and the reality today is that over 50% police and fire services employees earn over $100,000 (per year) and that’s just reflective of the market place and what is required to attract and retain those individuals to perform those important services in the city.”
Lacey says the city executive recognizes the financial challenge.
“Recognizing that challenge, the executive at the city did not accept a general wage increase in their salary, so they took a 0% increase,” Lacey says. “As well, there’s been significant work to find operational savings in the city, including over $9 Million in savings, which included the elimination of 20 vacant positions at the city.”
Three members of the top five highest paid on city payroll are members of Regina Police, including Police Chief Evan Bray.
