The NDP is upset about huge increases for some farmers leasing crown farmland.
NDP agriculture critic Carla Beck says some farmers who don’t want to buy their crown farmland have seen lease fees jump 100 percent in four years.
She says it is unfair.
Agriculture minister Lyle Stewart says the province has had a series of programs to encourage farmers to buy their crown farmland.
He says owning farmland is not a good use of government resources.
He says rents have been increased and purchase incentives offered to encourage farmers to buy their crown land.
Stewart says the government has had several programs during the past 10 years to sell-off crown farmland which has no extra public value or is not environmentally sensitive.
