The Living Sky School Division is calling on the provincial government for help.
Since the start of 2018, the North Battleford based school district has seen five suicides, all of them youth.
Following Monday’s sitting of the Legislature, Minister of Education Gord Wyant said three requests had been submitted:
- Implementing a crisis line
- Funding for crisis intervention services
- Development of trauma protocol
“We have responded to the three requests has made of us,” he said. “We’re going to continue to have those conversations and, as I said, my deputy minister is in almost weekly contact with the school division.”
Education Critic Carla Beck responded by saying hearing isn’t enough. She said the requests made are quite reasonable and should be fulfilled.
“There isn’t a lot that is left in terms of being able to provide programming and supports that’s needed,” she said. “Frankly, a 1-800 line, at a time when you’re seeing the death of five young people to suicide, is a pretty small measure.”
