Saskatchewan Roughriders head coach and general manager Chris Jones is leaving a lot of veterans in Saskatoon as the team gets ready to play its first preseason game of the year in Edmonton Sunday.
Willie Jefferson, Ed Gainey, Zach Collaros, Jerome Messam and Rob Bagg are just some of those who will not dress when the Riders meet the Eskimos in a 3 o’clock start with our pre-game show starting at noon on 620 CKRM.
Jones says David Watford will start the game at quarterback with Marquise Williams and B.J Daniels also seeing playing time. Jones says he is looking forward to seeing what Watford can do.
“We look forward to seeing what he brings as a quarterback.” Jones said. “He’s very athletic, he has a tremendous arm, has great poise in the pocket and can make all the throws. Marquise is a good player too and we look forward to see what he can bring as well.”
Jones adds it is nice to get a game in again.
“It’s fun to be able to go and compete against somebody else to see all the work you’ve put in.” Jones said. “There’s going to be somebody who we have high expectations for who doesn’t quite reach what we think and then vice versa, there’s going to be somebody who we’re thinking a little less of who shows up and plays well and we go, ‘Oh. There are going to be some hard decisions coming down the road.”
The team will return to Saskatoon after Sunday’s game to continue with training camp. They will play their home pre-season game against Calgary June 8 with the season-opener happening one week later against the defending Grey Cup champion Toronto Argonauts.
