A Regina couple, arrested in April of 2017 after trying to smuggle nine Nigerians into Canada illegally were sentenced on Monday.
A judge in Estevan handed Victor Omoruyi a nine-month jail sentence along with a $20,000 fine plus $200 victim surcharge while his wife Michelle was given a twelve-month conditional sentence order. In the first two months of that order, she must abide by a curfew, and complete 40 hours of community service within the first six months. She also has been given a $10,000 fine.
The pair had previously pleaded guilty to a charge of human smuggling and possession of proceeds of crime.
