Investigators are looking into the cause of a huge hog barn fire in the Plenty area late Friday night.
The farrow-to-finish operation is owned by Olymel, and is located east of Plenty, about 170 kilometers west of Saskatoon.
Company spokesman Casey Smit said all of the pigs perished in the barn.
“That barn held approximately 10,000 to 12,000 pigs,” Smit said.
Smit added it is the largest fire in a facility owned by Olymel.
“This would be considered the largest one that we’ve ever experienced, we’ve been very fortunate with all the work that we do in our facilities not to experience more of these type of fires here,” he said.
About 10 people work at the Plenty location and the company is looking at re-location opportunities at other production barns.
