Just 24 hours after it was unveiled, the rainbow crosswalk at Ecole Harbour Landing was vandalized.
The crosswalk was painted to show support and acceptance for LGBTQ people, but tire marks left over the area have since tarnished it.
Dan Shier, co-chair of Regina Pride, said they are deeply disappointed with the vandalism.
“Our support goes out to the school and the students and the GSA (Gay-Straight Alliance) that were involved with putting that together, and it’s unfortunate but we’re here to support the school and the students in anyway possible.”
Shier said LGBTQ people deal with this level of discrimination daily.
“It’s important to remember that this is one of the reasons why pride exists, is to show that there are still struggles in our community,” Shier said. “We still see this type of thing happening to members of our community.”
Shier said on a bright note, Regina Public Schools have been very supportive by introducing several events to support LGBTQ people in schools, including Pride Proms and pride days.
