World Refugee Day was celebrated a day early this afternoon at City Square Plaza.
The plaza stage held performances, speeches and more from refugees now living in Regina.
Executive Director of the Regina Open Door Society Darcy Dietrich said people from all over the world now call Regina home.
“Canada chooses particular countries and there’s usually a couple from Africa, a couple from the Middle East, and wherever the hot spots are in the world, that’s definitely where we’re going to see refugees coming from.”
Dietrich said there’s constant refugee growth for the last 16 years.
“We feel that it’s really important every year to remind the public to bring this to their attention that there’s been another increase; we’re up to 68.5 Million displaced people in the world by the end of 2017.”
Dietrich also said only 7500 refugees are processed by the Canadian government every year, with 160 refugees in Regina being currently processed.
