When I was a kid, coming into Regina was a treat. It was especially a great day when we stopped at the Burger Baron location on Albert Street. Often it was after a football game.
The Roughriders had a different kind of schedule back then. So this would probably be following a Sunday 1 pm game. That pit stop for a Mushroom Burger was always the best, sometimes better than the game. And it was always the drive thru. Yes the burger, that sloppy piece of work that would dribble down the front of your shirt and worse yet onto the car seat! I can still hear E.P. swearing under his breath.
There are certain things in our life that remain firmly implanted and a stop at Burger Baron was one of those memories. The little “burger baron” figure happily looking at you as you spoke into the old speaker to give your order! I recall a checker board motif.
In my recent trips to the burger shack, I know, not enough visits to keep them open, I found that the burgers were maybe a bit thinner than they used to be. But the tater tots and milk shakes were just as good.
Farewell to Burger Baron, there will always be wonderful memories in that little original drive thru on Albert Street.
And if you look close enough when you are on the road this summer, you might just find a Burger Baron elsewhere in Western Canada!
