Grains analyst says grain movement was like a roller coaster in January

A grain movement analyst says January was a month of ups and downs in grain shipping by rail.

Milt Poirier with QGI Consulting says grain movement was poor at Christmas, saw some recovery in early January, but fell far behind later in the month.

Poirier says rail car order fulfillment at the end of January reached only 55 percent on CP Rail, the worst of the crop year, while CN was at 72 percent.

He says the highest rate of prairie grain shipments by rail is in Manitoba and the worst in Saskatchewan.
