02/08/10 What Good Is Superbowl If We Can’t Wath The Commercials?

Monday, February 8th, 2010

The “Ain’ts” are now the “Saints”….I am one happy Saint’s fan. Not just for their organization but for the Louisiana people who have endured hard times…

I can’t imagine what the celebration is going to be like……You should see the party and parade that they host for dead people, I can’t wait to see what their Superbowl party is going to be like. Considering it bleeds right into the Marti Gras celebration.

The only beef I have is why do we have to watch the local TV feed.  99% of the Superbowl is the new commercials that company’s spend millions of dollars on. I also can’t believe the way they pumped the Winter Olympics down our throats…At least get more than 2 commercials that rotate. If you missed the commercials like I did, the best place to watch them is here at this link….   http://www.youtube.com/user/adblitz

Tommy Hunter and me

There’s a little game coming Sunday called Super Bowl.

Carrie Underwood will kick things off by singing the National Anthem.

Super Bowl Sunday will be the one and only time of the year where I’ll say “Shut Up, the commercials are on”.

superbowl

Again my heart is with the Saints and my money is with the Colts…..I’m not sure where Donnie and I will watch it, but if your hosting a party, here are my useful tips…..

5…invite people who want the Colts to win so everyone’s happy after the opening kick-off

4…plan on having a snack tray set up near the line-up for the bathroom

3…even if the games a blow-out, don’t suggest switching the TV to Cougar Town on ABC

2…plan on serving the food when the game becomes really lopsided….so at the end of the first quarter should be about right

1…don’t let anyone who’s been drinking heavily have the volume control at half time

 Tobboganning

This Sunday we will be snow tubing for Haiti at Ravine Adventures by Abernethy. From 2pm until 7pm. The Cost is $10 and all proceeds go to the Disaster Relief Fund. For info call 333-2029

What is going on with our beloved Rider’s. After we lost John Chick, I thought to myself, well if it’s just one, we can handle it. Now today word comes to us that Stevie Baggs is going not coming back to put the fear into the oppositions hearts and minds.  Our offensive co-ordinator has been offered the Head coaching job in Winnipeg (who would want to move there?) and there could be more shake-ups. It seems like yesterday that I was blogging about a Dynasty with all our young talent here. Now what does the future hold in store for us. How do you think we’ll rank in the West standings this year?? Leave me a comment.

Here is the chat I had with Rod Pederson this morning after it was made official that Stevie (Tagg’em & Bagg’em was leaving).

01/03/2010 Check Yourself Out

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

If you’ve been listening to my show this week you probably noticed a lot of reference to stress and how it affects our health. February is Heart Month.

The Heart & Stroke Foundation has released this statement.

The Heart and Stroke Foundation’s 2010 Annual Report on Canadians’ Health warns that a “perfect storm” of risk factors and demographic changes are converging to create an unprecedented burden on Canada’s fragmented system of cardiovascular care, and no Canadian – young or old – will be left unaffected.

Talk about jumping right to the point. Maybe it takes the scare factor to get us concerned. I know that a change of diet has improved my health greatly. Thanks Donnie. Sleep is also key to feeling good and reducing stress.

On their website is a great health assesment survey to find your stress levels. Check it out at www.heartandstroke.sk.ca

This blew my mind…..

‘Women living in stressful times give birth to more girls than boys. ‘

When times are tough — during drought or famine, for instance, or even during a more modern-style calamity such as massive layoffs from a large company — stress hormones in a woman’s body have an influence on the sex of her child or children, should she have them at this time: Thanks to evolution, there’s a slightly higher chance she’ll have a girl, since daughters stand a better chance to reproduce during hard times than men do. Recently, UC Berkeley researchers discovered that stress hormones make the uterus slightly more hostile to a male fetus during tough times, and further, that the body will spontaneously abort more boys than girls.

on a different note, check out this photo ……

asteroid or ship discoverd by hubble telescope

Found by the Hubble telescope recently. This object is flying at 11,000 miles per hour. Notice how it’s in the shape of an X.

Asteroid or a Klingon warship? or maybe Bill Gates is promoting a new X Box console??

01/02/10 The Big “C” Claimed Another Loved One

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

This week was another tough one on our family. I know nothing lasts forever, but shouldn’t we be able to enjoy our time on this world pain free. The pain has ended for my wonderful Aunt Lois, out in Victoria, who lost her battle with cancer this week. She had numerous operations in her fight for survival. After the last one, she said she wouldn’t have gone through with them, if she had known, how they would consume so much of her final days.

Her passing, has again, put the meaning of life into the forefront of my existence. What are my chances of survival to a fruitful ending. On my Mom’s side of the family, heart disease and diabetes reigns supreme. Reaching the age 68 is a good run according to the family stats.  Life on Dad’s side, is managed by the big C and tumours.

I’m not scared on how it will all end, but, I am concerned over the quality of life leading up to it all. Consider yourself lucky if a loved one went fast and without pain. There is nothing more excruciating  than watching a loved one suffer. It is the low life in life.

I think most disease’s are caused by genetics. We all have the cancer causing genes in us, but for the most part they remain dormant.

I don’t want to be all doom and gloom about this so I came across this story about protecting yourself against cancer. This study says that forty percent of the 12 million people diagnosed with cancer worldwide each year could avert the killer disease by protecting themselves against infections and changing their lifestyles.

Below is the story. I hope it gives you some cause for optimism.

A report by the Geneva-based International Union Against Cancer (UICC) highlighted nine infections that can lead to cancer and urged health officials to drive home the importance of vaccines and lifestyle changes in fighting the disease.”If there was an announcement that somebody had discovered a cure for 40 percent of the world’s cancers, there would quite justifiably be huge jubilation,” UICC president David Hill told Reuters in a telephone interview.”But the fact is that we have, now, the knowledge to prevent 40 percent of cancers.

The tragedy is, we’re not using it.”Cervical and liver cancer, both caused by infections which can be prevented with vaccines, should be top priorities, the report said, not only in rich nations, but also in developing countries where 80 percent of global cervical cancer occur.Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide and the total number of cases globally is increasing, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).The number of global cancer deaths is projected to rise by 45 percent from 2007 to 2030 from 7.9 million to 11.5 million deaths, driven partly by a growing and aging global population. The UICC said it wanted to focus policymakers’ attention on cancer-preventing vaccines — like ones made by GlaxoSmithKline and Merck & Co against the human papillomavirus (HPV) which causes cervical cancer, and others against hepatitis B, which causes liver disease and cancer.”Policymakers around the world have the opportunity and obligation to use these vaccines to save people’s lives and educate their communities toward lifestyle choices and control measures that reduce their risk of cancer,” Cary Adams, UICC’s chief executive, said in a commentary on the report.Other cancer-causing infections include hepatitis C, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and Epstein Barr, a herpes-type virus transmitted by saliva.

The experts said the risk of developing cancer could potentially be reduced by up to 40 percent if full immunization and prevention measures were deployed and combined with simple lifestyle changes like quitting smoking, eating healthily, limiting alcohol intake and reducing sun exposure.Hill said national health authorities should also work to dispel widespread myths about cancer, in particular a sense of fatalism felt by many people in the face of the disease. As part of this, the UICC is launching a campaign called “Cancer can be prevented too” on World Cancer Day on February 4 to encourage people to face up to the fact that smoking, poor diet and some infections carry high cancer risks.European cancer experts issued a report last year warning that a wave of cancer now threatens developing countries, estimating that around half of the 12.4 million new cases in 2008 occurred in low and middle income countries.Despite the availability of so much scientific knowledge about the disease’s causes, Hill said there was great concern among health experts that “the opportunity to prevent this huge escalation of cancer may be missed.”

01/02/2010 Happy February!!!

Wow! what happened to January??? It’s gone. Time Flies when your having fun and busy.

Congratulations are in order to the Central Butte Recreation Association on their lottery sellout, that I have been involved with the last couple of years. The bigger thanks goes to you if you bought a ticket. Many small communities rely on these lottery’s to sustain their community projects. It’s sad it’s come to this, but there is no other choice unless you let the town die and we all know, that nobody has bigger community spirit than Saskatchewanians.

The Alzheimer Society Forget -Me-Not-Walk was another success, held at the Fieldhouse, on Sunday. This was the second year I hosted it and it continues to grow. When the final tally is in, Joanne Michael is hoping for around $100,000. Over 165 people took part in the walk. Check out the photo’s below that were sent to me by Cindy Dorr of Creative Memories Consultant

01/25/10 A Taste Of The Past

Monday, January 25th, 2010

Some of  our South Saskatchewan residents have learned what it’s like to live without some crucial amenities, such as power and phone coverage. Everyday we wake up and take for granted that, with the flick of a switch, we control the environment around us. From making coffee to turning up the heat, we take for granted that our daily routine will continue as normal. When we lose control, of these daily functions, we sometimes don’t know how to cope with the situation. Try going for 3 days without power or phone service.

   Snow and more snow

Community’s such as, Coronach, Ogema, Lake Alma, Rockglen, Scout Lake, Bengough among others, know what it is like. It would be like going back to the stone age for some. Now think of our ancestors and the pioneers that came before us and the hardships they endured. One of my listeners said ”It sure slows the world down”. I couldn’t of said it any better. Another caller said that his cows would have to eat snow for a day or two until he can get the tractor out of the shed and started.

here’s a few of the calls I took today ……………..   Southern Sask callers on conditions

As much as I admire what my grandparents went through, thank God, I grew up in this era.

If you have any photo’s of the snow in your area, feel free to send me some or if you want to comment on the conditions in your area please do so and I’ll add them to my blog.

thanks

01/22/10 Friday Facts

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

-Some big fund raiser’s for Haitian relief tonight starting at 6pm….. Canada for Haiti and then Hope for Haiti. Some big names contributing to this worthwhile cause.  Both telethons on CTV and Much Music. Found some interesting facts on Canada’s contribution. Canada is the world’s most generous contributor of aid to Haiti on a per-ca pita basis and has a legitimate right to ask for a lead role in the country’s reconstruction. Canada leads the world if calculations are based on a per ca pita formula, with each Canadian effectively contributing more than $5 U.S. to Haiti, compared to less than $1 from each American. Only in Canada!

 conan

His last show will be tonight.

In his monologue last night, he apologized to the guests he had scheduled for next week, including President Barack Obama, the Queen of England and ‘our good friend, Elvis Presley. He confided that his separation from the network meant ‘NBC dropped off all my CDs and picked up its lava lamp. He shared some unusual terms of the agreement, including his returning ‘the Etch-A-Sketch my contract was written on, and that, ‘Effective today, NBC will stop paying for (announcer) Andy Richter’s medical marijuana.

And he gets 45 million for that kind of material?

- Linda Blair is 51 today ……….. that outta turn some heads!!!

01/21/10 Stuff is Stuff!

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

The time has come…..Time for me to downsize!!

When you live in a apartment it’s hard to collect and store your possessions. There is no room for it. Sure I have some cool stuff that I love, but what does it really mean to me? Sentimental collections are something we all get caught up in. We hang on to things that have no real value.

If you think about it, downsizing is really just simplifying your life. You have to ask yourselves how much stuff do you really need. If you haven’t used something in the last two years, donate it or sell it. You will be surprised as how a de-cluttered home will lessen stress and can simplify your life.

cluttered

What I’m doing is thinking about all of my stuff. Do I really need it all? Now this answer is going to be different for everyone. The key is to find a good balance. Decide on the things that are the most important to you, look at how you spend your time and decide what you can cut back on. Sell some of your stuff that you’ve accumulated over the years. You don’t want to keep finding places to store it and never using it.

Recycle what you can, donate the rest or sell it.

By the way I have some good stuff for sale , including a SA-AK27 Panasonic compact stero with remote..Like New.. contact me for more info
