Swift Current Mayor and MLA still measuring damage after freak storm drops 76 millimeters of rain in one hour

Swift Current Mayor Denis Perrault and local MLA Everett Hindley are assessing the damage after Tuesday’s massive rainstorm in the southwest.

Close to three inches (76.2 mm) of rain fell in about one hours time, flooding streets and properties.

Perrault says by 9:00 p.m. Tuesday night almost all the water had drained through the city’s storm sewers.

“They handled all the water as expected and were eventually able to clear all that flood water,” Perrault said. “We are taking the chance now with our infrastructure teams to look at ways we can maybe improve the system, there’s a lot of very old infrastructure under the streets in Swift Current, and right now we have to do the best with what we have,” Perrault continued.

Perrault was also very pleased to see how city crews handled the emergency in such a quick and efficient.

He says restoration companies were also out quickly trying to mitigate any initial damage.

“My suggestion to home owners with damage is to continue to work with restoration and insurance companies as well, I’m very hopeful that everyone will be able to get this clean up in very short order,” Perrault said.

Both Perrault and MLA Everett Hindley said the event was extreme, adding there’s no storm sewer system anywhere that would not have been overwhelmed with that much rain that fast.
