Silvernagle left out in Scotties selection

CURLSASK has named its representatives for this year national curling championships. They do not include two-time defending Scotties champion Robyn Silvernagle.

CURLSASK decided to cancel the Tankard, Scotties and Mixed Doubles Championships for 2021 after the provincial government rejected the group’s proposal for a “bubble” event. Without a play-down, CURLSASK had to pick representatives to play at the national events.

With player changes to both the men’s and women’s provincial champions from last year, CURLSASK says they used performance over two seasons “calculated based on the current registered lineups of each team” according to to a release.

With Silvernagle’s rink making two changes since last season (Kristen Streifel and Dayna Demers replacing Stefanie Lawton and Kara Thevenot), CURLSASK’s points system means Sherry Anderson’s rink will represent Saskatchewan at this year’s Scotties. That leaves the skip who won the last two women’s provincial titles out of the mix–unless Silvernagle’s rink is able to get a wild card entry.

Anderson’s rink has made one change from last year’s team, with Breanne Knapp replacing Meaghan Frerichs.

On the men’s side, Matt Dunstone’s rink will represent Saskatchewan. The two-time defending provincial champions have made one change since last season, bringing in Kirk Muyres to replace Catlin Schneider. But their performance still came out on top in CURLSASK’s points system.

The Mixed Doubles champions from 2020 remain intact, so Mike Armstrong and Ashley Quick will represent the province.

The Scotties is set for Feb. 20-28, the Brier March 6-14 and the mixed doubles March 18-25. All three events will be played in Calgary
