The City of Regina is launching a new recycling pilot project for leisure centres.

The city says about 70 per cent of what goes into the landfill comes from businesses, institutions, construction, industry and workplaces.

The new project will put new split garbage and recycling bins in 12 city-owned facilities like the Sportsplex, Sandra Schmirler Leisure Centre, Northwest Leisure Centre and South Leisure Centre, giving people more options to recycle waste like plastics, paper towel and cardboard.

The city hopes this will cut down the quantity of trash and hike landfill diversion rates from 14 to 60 per cent.

Mayor Michael Fougere said in a release, “it’s critical that we do our part and show Regina that environmental sustainability is possible by expanding the current recycling program at City facilities.”

The results from this project will help form a recommendation to city council in late 2020 for a recycling program for non-residential properties.
