Hospitalizations climb – Shahab says Omicron peak is still weeks away

New case numbers and hospitalizations continue to climb in the province with the provincial hotspots for new COVID-19 cases continuing to be Saskatoon and Regina respectively.

The province now has 189 hospitalized cases of COVID-19, including 18 people in the ICU. This number marks the highest numbers the province has seen since November.

Case count wise – the province reported 1089 new cases, and currently has an active case count of more than 11,781 in the province. Among the new cases 433 are reported in the Saskatoon area, 187 in the Regina zone, 56 in the North Central Region.

The peak of the Omicron Surge appears to still be a few weeks out according to modeling done by the Saskatchewan Health Authority.

“The Province will likely see the peak of Omicron come late January early February, with the peak in our hospitalization numbers occurring 2-3 weeks after that.”

Shahab added that during  the forthcoming weeks our best defense is to continue following all public health guidelines, wearing a good fitting high quality mask, and ensuring that we continue to  get our vaccinations and boosters
